THE LANTERN Brisbane CBD

The requirement for a new lift and fire stair on a heritage listed medical suite provided an opportunity to express the building’s motto ‘Lux Sanat’ (light heals). The rear of the building had previously presented a dark, closed end to the secluded inner city laneway. What it desperately needed was light. The resulting addition is a series of filtered glass foyers that channel daylight deep into the building’s hallways. At night, the lantern-like structure glows in an open, inviting gesture to the street.
